1985
1985 saw Michigan finish atop the base RPR ratings following a victory in the Fiesta Bowl. The Wolverines were the only team to finish in the top 6 in all 3 rating components. Oklahoma, the consensus poll champion following their Orange Bowl win over then-unbeaten Penn State, was in a virtual deadlock by virtue of their Win % and Score Ratio. Bowl-banned Florida and SEC/Sugar Bowl champion Tennessee both finished within the CCT cutoff as well. When examining the teams further, the Sooners being so close wasn’t a fluke; therefore, they received co-champion status with Michigan on the year.
