1986

1986 saw Oklahoma finish atop the initial RPR following their Orange Bowl win over Arkansas. The Sooners sported the nation’s best Score Ratio and tied for 2nd-best Win %. Two other teams finished within the CCT cutoff: consensus poll champion Penn State and Miami. The Nittany Lions boasted the nation’s best Win % as the lone unbeaten following their Fiesta Bowl win over Miami. The Hurricanes boasted a head-to-head win over the Sooners. When looking into the two teams, Penn State came out ahead while Miami pushed even at best even with the head-to-head win. It was hard to deny the Hurricanes co-champion status but given how Penn State stacked up and with Miami having fell to the Nittany Lions, my co-champion decision was to stick with just Penn State here.
